World's Largest Aquarium

Lisbon's Oceanarium is one of the world's largest aquariums. Designed by American architect Peter Chermeyeff, it rises from the river and is reached by a footbridge.

It is a deep-sea diving experience without any of the risks, with about 25,000 fish, seabirds, and mammals in an enormous central tank that is the size of four Olympic-sized swimming pools. Inside the Oceanarium

Visitors can look into it from different levels for close-ups of the various creatures, including different species of sharks.

But it's the design rather than the size that makes it outstanding. It is the first aquarium ever to incorporate world ocean habitats within a single environment, with impressive recreations of various ocean ecosystems -- the Antarctic tank containing penguins, and the Pacific tank with otters playing in rock pools.

They are all separated from the main tank by invisible acrylic walls, giving the impression that all the creatures are swimming in the same space.

There are also high-tech multilingual interactive displays explaining the development of ocean life.

IF Homer Simpson thought heaven was the episode where he was in hell with a never-ending supply of doughnuts, then Circular Quay this morning would have come a close second. To celebrate the release of The Simpsons Movie on dvd, the Simpsons family oversaw the construction of the world’s largest doughnut. And the numbers? It took 40 people over nine hours to build, using over 90,000 doughnuts, half a tonne of pink icing and 30kg of sprinkles from Donut King. The giant doughnut measures six metres and weighs a whopping 3.5 tonnes, which is the equivalent of two rhinoceroses. Once the giant doughnut’s media duties are complete, the doughnuts will be donated to Oz Harvest, a Sydney-based charity that collects excess food for organisations that feed disadvantaged men, women and children.

In the south of Serbia, 27 km south-east of Kursumlija, lies a first-class natural landmark – Djavolja Varos (”Devil’s Town”). Two rare natural phenomena at the same spot: 202 stone formations created by erosion, between two and 15 meters in height and the middle diameter of under 1 m, topped by stone blocks weighing as much as 100 kg, appearing unreal and yet lasting for centuries, and two springs of extremely acid water (pH 1,5) with high mineral content (15 g/l; content of some elements even 1000 times as high as in ordinary drinking waters) make Djavolja Varos a true wonder of nature.

The natural surrounding area adds to the attraction of these two wonders, depicting a rather harsh, almost mystical atmosphere, but at the same time picturesque and timid, just like the remains of the town, old church, cemetery, and several interesting mines.

Djavolja Varos has been put under protection of the state in 1959, while in 1995, by the Decision of the Serbian Government, it was declared the natural good of an outstanding importance, giving it the first-category level of protection – NATURAL MONUMENT. Thus, the whole 67 hectares of its territory are protected.

Sea Scorpion - Was Bigger Than a Human

The immense fossilised claw of a 2.5m-long (8ft) sea scorpion has been described by European researchers. The 390-million-year-old specimen was found in a German quarry, the journal Biology Letters reports. The creature, which has been named Jaekelopterus rhenaniae, would have paddled in a river or swamp.

The size of the beast suggests that spiders, insects, crabs and similar creatures were much larger in the past than previously thought, the team says. The claw itself measures 46cm - indicating its owner would have been longer even than the average-sized human. Overall, the estimated size of the animal exceeds the record for any other sea scorpion (eurypterid) find by nearly 50cm. The eurypterids are believed to be the extinct aquatic ancestors of modern land scorpions and possibly all arachnids (the class of animals that also includes spiders).

"The biggest scorpion today is nearly 30cm so that shows you how big this creature was," said Dr Simon Braddy from the University of Bristol, UK. It was one of Dr Braddy's co-authors, Markus Poschmann, who made the discovery in the quarry near Prum in western Germany. "I was loosening pieces of rock with a hammer and chisel when I suddenly realised there was a dark patch of organic matter on a freshly removed slab," he recalled. "After some cleaning I could identify this as a small part of a large claw. Although I did not know if it was more complete or not, I decided to try and get it out. "The pieces had to be cleaned separately, dried, and then glued back together. It was then put into a white plaster jacket to stabilise it."Super-sized meals. The species existed during a period in Earth history when oxygen levels in the atmosphere were much higher than today. And it was those elevated levels, some palaeo-scientists believe, that may have helped drive the super-sized bodies of many of the invertebrates that existed at that time - monster millipedes, huge cockroaches, and jumbo dragonflies. But Dr Braddy thinks the large scales may have had a lot to do with the absence early on of vertebrate predators. As they came on the scene, these animals would have eaten all the biggest prey specimens.

"The fact that you are big means you are more likely to be seen and to be taken for a tastier morsel," he told BBC News. "Evolution will not select for large size; you want to be small so you can hide away." The scorpions are thought to have made their first scuttles on to land about 450 million years ago. While some would have taken up a fully terrestrial existence, others like Jaekelopterus rhenaniae would have maintained an aquatic or semi-aquatic lifestyle.

A Chinese man is hoping to get in the record books after creating what he claims is the world's largest working mobile phone. It is 3ft high and weighs 48lbs and is an exact copy of his own phone - but 620 times bigger /Lu Feng

Mr Tan, of Songyuan city, says his 3ft high phone, which weighs 48lbs, is an exact copy of his own phone - but 620 times bigger. A local journalist tested the phone by making calls and sending text messages and pronounced it completely functional, reports City News. Tan says it has all the functions of a normal phone, with a built-in camera and internet access but has to be plugged into the mains as he hasn't managed to build a big enough battery.

"The only other difference is that I didn't incorporate the vibrate function," he said. Tan, an electronics enthusiast, says he came up the idea for the giant phone a year and a half ago and finally started work on it with his father six months ago.

"Many friends worried I couldn't finish it, and only my father encouraged me to continue," he said.

"The neighbours were always knocking on my door asking what was going on with all the noise from the apartment, and even my wife was complaining."

Negara Brunei Darussalam (The Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace)

2. Government

Brunei is a Malay Muslim monarchy ruled by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the 29th monarch in succession to the throne.

The Sultan is also the Prime Minister heading a team of cabinet ministers. His Majesty is the Defence and Finance Minister. The Ministers each head a ministry and Deputy Ministers assist them in some ministries and Permanent Secretaries in all ministries. The ministries are divided into various departments; each headed by a Director. Brunei's four districts – Brunei Muara, Belait, Tutong and Temburong are each under the supervision of a District Officer. Each District Officer has a team of Mukim heads termed as Penghulus. A Mukim is a sub-division of a district. Each Mukim is divided into various villages headed by Ketua Kampongs (village headmen) Other grassroots representatives are long-house Tuais (elders) and the Pehin Kapitan Cina, who represents the Chinese community.

3. National Language

Malay or Bahasa Melayu is the national and official language of the country. The Malays form the biggest ethnic group in Brunei. However, English is widely spoken and understood especially in the business community. The various indigenous groups speak indigenous dialects in Brunei. Chinese groups speak Mandarin, Hokkien and Cantonese as well as the national language, Bahasa Melayu.

4. Area

The country covers an expanse of 5,800 square kilometeres and has a coastline of about l30kms. About 75% of the land is covered in jungle, most of which is pristine rain -forest.

5. Climate

Brunei has a tropical equatorial climate with a high mean temperature of about 28 degrees Celsius. Average annual rainfall is a high 3,295mm while the mean humidity level is in excess of 80%. Climate is largely influenced by seasonal monsoons. The dry months are usually during March to May (the period of uncertain winds and changing monsoons), and the wet months are between November to February (North-East monsoons).

6. Topography

Brunei has an undulating landscape marked by low hills and wide valleys. It has a narrow coastal plain which is intersected by several rivers descending from a mountainous hinterland. Temburong district, the eastern split half, is more hilly and mountainous.

The major Brunei, Tutong, Belait and Temburong rivers and its tributaries drain the valleys. Mangrove swamps usually cover the lower reaches of the rivers and the upper reaches are often stony with rapids in the higher regions. Beaches facing the open sea are sandy and a mixture of sand and mangrove in the areas away from the sea.

7. Population

The total population stands at 305,100 (1996 figures). Population is concentrated in Brunei-Muara District, along coastal regions and major rivers of the country. Population density is 53 persons per square kilometre. Population growth averages at 3.1% per year. The annual birth and death rates are 2.5% and 0.33% respectively. Life expectancy for men is 72.1 and for women, it is 76.5 years.
